Hosting support

What kind of technical support is available? Emergency support?
Technical support is available 24/7 via email for general questions concerning your hosting plan features or for plan changes. We have an average response time of only a few hours for most issues. Emergencies, such as down server, are attended to immediately.
How fast are your servers?
While we utilize various servers, from IBM and Intel, our most common configuration is 2GHz CPU or faster (1 or 2 CPUs), 2GB RAM or more, RAID 5 or RAID 10 disk arrays. Consequently, you can be assured of having the processing power to run your hosted applications.
Will I be able to upgrade? What is the fee? How does the upgrade work?
You can upgrade from any plan to any other plan at any time without a fee. If you do a simple upgrade then the upgrade will be seamless and will be done quickly.
How many hosting accounts do you have?
We currently host over one thousand domains on many different types of systems.
Can I see one of your customer's site?
Because of our privacy and security policies we do not give out the names or sites of our customers.
How often do you backup the web servers? What would happen if I needed to restore from a backup?
Our servers are backed up daily. These backups are intended for disaster-recovery purposes (i.e. a server crash) so you should always backup your files so that you can restore them if you accidentally delete them. If you require us to perform a tape restore, there may be a service fee for the restore.
How many VDSs or sites do you put on one server?
There is no pre-established limit for the number of sites per server. Some servers have hundreds of sites while other servers have only a few sites. We realize that the servers must be fast for high volume and e-commerce sites so we do not overload any server. We generally try to keep our servers' average CPU usage below 25 percent of capacity.
What are your network features?
Our network connectivity is provided by three Internet providers; Qwest, UUNet and Cogent. These three providers are configured in a BGP4 routed configuration that provides for automatic fail-over in the event of a provider outage. That is, if one or two Internet providers go down for any reason, the remaining providers will carry the traffic in/out of our data center.
Am I able to manage my domain if I register/transfer it through virtualoft?
Yes. If you would like to manage your domain just let us know and we will give you the information you need.
What do you do to ensure that your servers are up and running 24/7?
We purchase high quality equipment with redundant components. Additionally, all of our servers are monitored 24 hours a day. In the event of a server failure, we are notified automatically of the failure and will attend to the server immediately.
I have requirements that are between two of your plans, can I get a custom plan?
Yes, we do setup custom plans for those with special requirements. Just fill out our Contact Us form or Questionnaire to give us all of your requirements and we'll send you a price quote.
Is a web-mail client available for your plans?
Yes, there is web-mail for the FrontPage, Sharepoint, and all VDS plans. However, there is no web-mail for the Unix Shared plans.
What happens after I place an order? How soon will my account be set up once I place my order?
We will process your order usually within a few hours and then send you an "Account Activation" letter. In this letter you will receive all the information necessary to access your account.

Unix VDS Plan Questions

Will I have root access to my VDS?
On the VDS you have a 'virtual root' or superuser access. This should not be confused with 'root' access on the physical server, which is not available. The VDS runs in a CHROOT environment. Therefore, your VDS and all of its services run under a single user account. You can have SSH access with this user account and can therefore administer your VDS.
Can I install my own software?
You can install most applications under the VDS. You cannot install software from RPMs and you cannot install software that requires root privileges (which run at the physical server OS level and affect all VDSs)./dd>
Do the Unix VDS plans really host multiple (separate!!!) web sites?
Yes, you can host multiple web sites that have completely different site content.
How are the Unix/Linux Virtual Dedicated Servers (VDS) hosting accounts different from a real Unix/Linux dedicated server?
The Unix/Linux VDS environment should be thought of as subset of a real dedicated server. Each VDS runs its own instance of its services. That is, each VDS runs its own instance or Apache web server, Sendmail mail server, MySQL database, etc. The VDS runs in a CHROOT environment and therefore, your VDS and all of its services run under your own superuser account and are separated from all other VDSs on the same physical server. Each VDS is isolated from all other VDSs so that a program bug or crash in another a VDS will not affect your VDS. Furthermore, you can make customizations to your VDS that will not affect other VDSs.
Can I connect to MySQL remotely?
Yes, This allows you to share a single MySQL database with multiple VDSs.
Is the database size included with my total disk usage?
Yes, your database size is included in your disk quota, as are all logs for your VDS.
Will I have the ability to password protect my content?
Yes, you may password protect your site with .htaccess/.htpasswd files. For more information about password protection with .htpasswd, you can look at the "password protection" article in our Knowledge Base or do a search at google.com for '.htpasswd protection'.
Will I have the ability to prevent hot-linking?
Yes, you may prevent hot-linking with .htaccess files. For more information about preventing hot-linking with .htaccess, you can look at the "prevent hot linking" article in our Knowledge Base or do a search at google.com for '.htaccess hot-link protection'.
Can I run cron jobs on my VDS?
Yes, you can run cron jobs on the VDS.
Do I need to purchase an SSL certificate in order to use SSL?
No. Unix VDS hosting plans can use the SharedSSL ValueApp that allows you to use SSL without having to purchase an SSL certificate.
